Hockey

Structurally under-bought across Florida, and genuinely under-served in the one Tampa Bay market with year-round ice.

Hockey is a small category by national volume and a real one in this specific territory, for two reasons that have nothing to do with each other. The first is an NHL franchise in Tampa with a fan base built over three decades and two generations. The second is that Pasco County has a multi-sheet ice facility that has made organized youth and adult hockey a year-round activity in a market where the sport should not exist.

The consequence is a demand pattern most Florida retailers do not plan for. Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes, Lutz and New Tampa contain families whose children play hockey weekly, whose parents follow the NHL closely, and who buy hockey product at a rate the regional average does not predict. Stores routinely under-stock it because national volume says to, and the national average is not the customer standing in the store.

For a retailer this is one of the clearer opportunities in the category set: small absolute numbers, low competition for shelf attention, and a customer who is genuinely under-served. It is not a category to build a store around. It is a category most stores in this territory carry too little of.

Buying this category

  • Test small before concluding it does not sell. Most Florida stores conclude hockey does not move on an inventory that was never visible.
  • Weight toward the Tampa franchise and toward current-year product. The local fan base and the youth-hockey families are the demand, not the national market.
  • Stock it visibly. A category with a small, motivated customer base fails when it is filed rather than displayed.
  • In Pasco specifically, carry more than the regional average suggests. That market has an asset the rest of Florida does not.

Configurations

Hobby box
The primary configuration. Generally more available than the equivalent basketball or football product.
Inner case
Available on some products and usually the right size for a Florida store.
Full case
Manufacturer case quantity. Rarely the right commitment for a Florida retailer.
Retail configurations
Blasters and multi-packs. The entry point for a store testing the category.

Counts vary by product, manufacturer and year — there is no industry standard. Always confirm boxes per case before comparing prices. Why that matters

Seasonality

Builds through the autumn with the season, holds through the winter and the gift season, peaks through the spring playoffs, and goes quiet through the summer.

Pricing is behind approval

Approved dealers see wholesale pricing, real availability and preorder windows. None of it appears on the public site.

In this territory

Markets where Hockey leads.

Communities across the W&S territory where this category is the strongest local demand — and where a store buying to a national category report would get it wrong.

Questions

Hockey and W&S.

In this territory, more than most retailers assume. A thirty-year-old NHL franchise with two generations of fans, plus a year-round ice facility in Pasco, produces a customer base that exists whether or not a store stocks for it. It is a small category everywhere; it is a smaller category than it should be in the stores that serve those families.
